Apartments and Housing Allowance / Offices and Guest Rooms

The Wissenschaftskolleg provides its Fellows with a suitable apartment in one of its three buildings on the campus.

  • Villa Walther:
Fellows who come with a partner or family are housed in the Villa Walther, about five minutes by foot away from the main building.
  • Villa Jaffé:
Here, Fellows live in spacious studios (with high ceilings and parquet floors), and with adjoining offices, and a shared kitchen.
  • Hauptgebäude (main building):
Short-Term Fellows usually live in the main building. The studios contain fully equipped workplaces and use the two shared kitchens in the building.

Smoking is not permitted in our studios.

All apartments are fully furnished and the kitchens contain all the necessary tableware and cooking utensils. They are rented to the Fellows for the period of their fellowship – as a rule, from September through July.

For Fellows who come to the Wissenschaftskolleg with school-age children or who take part in the preparatory German course in the summer, the apartments are available earlier.

Double rent costs should not arise for Fellows during their fellowship.

  • If during a fellowship Fellows receive at least 20% of their salary from their home institution, then the Wissenschaftskolleg will cover the net rent in Berlin.
  • All other Fellows must pay 10% of their stipend or of the costs of their replacement at their home institute as net rent. The rest of the net rent in Berlin is paid by the Wissenschaftskolleg.
  • If a Fellow rents out his or her apartment at home, half of the rental revenue is deducted from the housing allowance in Berlin.

The utilities (heating, water, trash removal, etc.) are always charged to the Fellows.

As far as possible, each Fellow will be provided with a study, either in his or her apartment or as a separate office on the campus.

The Wissenschaftskolleg has a few guest rooms. They serve as short-term accommodations for the Fellows’ research guests.

Private visitors of the Fellows can also be accommodated in the guest rooms.
