Essential: An Economics of What We Cannot Live Without
What is the difference between a ventilator and chewing gum, between food and fashion, between energy and entertainment? From the perspective of universal market laws they appear as fundamentally the same: reducible to their price or exchange values. Yet our age of overlapping emergencies where climate disasters, pandemics, trade wars, and geopolitical conflicts coincide shatters this “jelly-like sameness of things.” This project revisits the question of essentials for livelihoods and production in the history of economic thought and asks what an economics centered on guaranteeing essentials could look like, how stabilizing their provisioning can be linked to a transformation of our economies towards ecological sustainability and democracy.Recommended Reading
