SIAS Summer Institutes (SIASSI) - 2001 - 2015

(previously: "European and American Young Scholars' Summer Institutes")

The "SIAS Summer Institutes" are two-year research programs for young researchers and treat interdisciplinary topics.

The goal of the SIAS Summer Institutes is to sponsor joint interdisciplinary work by young European and American researchers, thus fostering research networks and common activities. The idea is that cohort formation will, in the long run, contribute to close ties between research activities in Europe and the USA while simultaneously supporting the further development of new fields of research.

Every Summer Institute consists of two 10- to 14-day workshops held in consecutive years, alternating between Europe and the United States. A team of one European and one American researcher heads the Summer Institute, in which these two Convenors and 20 Fellows - generally 10 Europeans and 10 Americans - as well as two to four specialists take part. Doctoral candidates and post-docs can apply for the publicly offered stipends. Post-docs' doctorates should have been completed no longer than five years earlier and their research work should have addressed the topic in question. Accepting the stipend obligates the researcher to take part in both workshops.

Responsible for the SIAS Summer Institutes is the SIAS (Some Institutes for Advanced Study), an association of currently seven Institutes for Advanced Study. Their Directors constitute the Summer Institutes' Steering Committee, whose tasks include determining the topics to be announced and pursued and commissioning European and American researchers with their execution. In its work, this Steering Committee is supported by large networks of outstanding researchers (Fellows and former Fellows), as well as by its diverse international institutional contacts.

The Alexander von Humboldt-Stiftung and the Andrew W. Mellon Foundation jointly fund the SIAS Summer Institutes, whose organization in Europe is the task of the Wissenschaftskolleg zu Berlin and in the USA of the National Humanities Center.

You will find a list of previous Summer Institutes here.

In June 2014, the Steering Committee of the SIAS-Summer Institutes met in Berlin and selected a proposal for the period 2015/2016. The seminar "The Investigation of Linguistic Meaning: In the Armchair, in the Field, and in the Lab" proposed by Professor Angelika Kratzer (University of Massachusetts, Amherst) and Professor Manfred Krifka (Humboldt-Universität zu Belrin und Zentrum für angewandte Sprachwissenschaft, Berlin) is dealing with a comparative analysis of different approaches to the study of linguistic meanig. The first leg of this Summer Institute took place in Berlin in the summer of 2015.

The summer institute on linguistic meaning was the last in the series of the SIAS Summer-Institutes. For the Wissenschaftskolleg, the program came to an end in 2015.
