A Cosmopollitan Theory of Territorial Justice

Ypi will complete a book provisionally entitled “Territorial Justice: A Cosmopolitan Account” that answers the following questions: what justifies the territorial rights of states? What implications does the defence of territorial rights have for the analysis of historical injustice and the control of resources, as well as migration and the right to exclude? Situated in a Kantian tradition that explores external freedom in relation to domestic and cosmopolitan justice, her analysis emphasises the provisional and conditional nature of states’ claim to territorial jurisdiction. The result is a novel theory of territorial rights that tries to avoid the status-quo bias of existing liberal theories whilst developing new insights on how to think about the state in new global circumstances.
