Professor Dr. iur. Christoph Möllers

Christoph Möllers, Professor of Public Law and Jurisprudence at Humboldt-Universität Berlin, has been Rector of the Wissenschaftskolleg since September 2026. He is a recipient of the Leibniz Prize and the Tractatus Prize, and a member of the Berlin-Brandenburg Academy of Sciences and Humanities and the German Academy for Language and Literature. He has been a Permanent Fellow of the Wissenschaftskolleg since 2012. As a legal representative before the Federal Constitutional Court, he has also repeatedly represented the Bundestag, the Bundesrat and the Federal Government.

  • 2011–2014: judge at the Supreme Administrative Court for Berlin Brandenburg
  • since 2009: chair of Public Law and Philosophy of Law at Humboldt University in Berlin
  • 2005–2009: chair of Public Law, in particular Constitutional Law, Constitutional Theory and Comparative Law, at the Georg-August University of Göttingen
  • 2004/2005: professor of Public Law at the Faculty of Law of the Westphalian Wilhelms University of Münster
  • habilitation at the University of Heidelberg; venia legendi in public law, philosophy of law, European law and international law
  • 2000–2004: research assistant to Eberhard Schmidt-Aßmann at the Institute for German and European Administrative Law, University of Heidelberg
  • 1997–2000: research assistant to Hartmut Bauer at Dresden University of Technology
  • 1999: was awarded a doctorate under Peter Lerche in Munich
  • 1997: second state examination in Berlin
  • 1995: Master of Laws from the University of Chicago Law School
  • 1994: first state examination in Munich
  • 1989–1994: studied law, philosophy and comparative literature in Tübingen, Madrid and Munich

He has held visiting professorships at the Universities of Paris I and II, at Princeton University, the Central European University and the London School of Economics. As a legal representative before the Federal Constitutional Court, he has also represented the Bundestag, the Bundesrat and the Federal Government. 

Research Interests

German, European and comparative constitutional law, democratic theory in public law, and theory of social normativity. Everything regarding formalized and institutionalized intersections of law and politics, including quantitative analysis of constitutional reasoning.
