Volkswagen Foundation funds the continuation of the Virtual Ukraine Institute for Advanced Study (VUIAS)
The Volkswagen Foundation has approved another three-year funding phase for the Virtual Ukraine Institute for Advanced Study (VUIAS). The institute, initiated by the Wissenschaftskolleg zu Berlin in cooperation with renowned partners in Ukraine, Europe, and the USA, will receive €1.2 million – enabling the program to continue until 2029.
The VUIAS was launched in the fall of 2023 by the Wissenschaftskolleg zu Berlin. In its initial phase, it is able to support over thirty Ukrainian scholars per year, both within Ukraine and abroad, while providing them with an intensive academic program. The long-term goal of this virtual project is the establishment of a permanent, physical institute based in Kyiv.
The renewed funding allows the project to continue and evolve under wartime conditions and potentially in the post-war period as well. Wherever security permits, in-person formats will be expanded and academic mobility to Ukraine will be encouraged. Our Kyiv location, where a project office already exists, will be further developed in terms of infrastructure, staff and partners.
