Can Autocrats Be Stopped? And What if Not? A View from Central Eastern Europe
In Hungary the process of autocratization started in 2010 when Viktor Orbán gained a parliamentary majority that enabled his party to alter the constitutional system as a whole. The country has become a model for authoritarian populists, who have conquered the federal government in the US and are exerting growing influence in key western democracies. Can liberal democracies deal with the increasing challenge of democratically elected autocrats?
