Aristotle's works on ethics have been a major influence on ethical thinking for more than 2300 years now. They contain, for instance, discussions concerning the good life, ethical virtue in general and the particular virtues such as courage or justice, practical deliberation and practical choice, friendship and its relation to the good life: all these discussions may influence our ethical thinking in general as they influence contemporary philosophical debates.
Following some remarks concerning this general interest and some remarks on the academic interest in Aristotle's ethics, the talk will address some questions for my project at the Wissenschaftskolleg: the German translation of and commentary on the earlier of the two works on ethics, the "Eudemian Ethics" (EE). (1) Text: Given the problems of the transmission of ancient texts, how exact are contemporary reconstructions of the Greek text of the EE compared with the text written or dictated by Aristotle? (2) Translation: How can we deal with the perennial problem that only few translations of words or phrases capture exactly the meaning of the original, whereas in philosophy, too, exactness of expression matters? How much will this difficulty affect the understanding of the text in translation? (3) Commenting: What should we expect from a commentary in terms of keeping a historical text alive, in terms of applying a principle of charitable reading and making the best possible sense of the text and, most of all, in terms of being the result of philosophical work?
