SUMMARY:Can the present explain the past? Explorations of a 15-million-year-long war
DESCRIPTION:Dieter Ebert - Pests, parasites, and pathogens are about as old as life itself, approximately four billion years. Evolutionary biologists aim, but struggle, to understand the processes at work during antagonistic interactions, and in particular in deep time. Dieter Ebert's presentation focuses on how hosts evolve to minimize disease caused by parasites, while parasites optimize their exploitation of these hosts. In his talk, he will travel backwards from today to deep time, asking if the battle we observe today can explain the patterns observed many million years ago.
