25th Anniversary of the Wissenschaftskolleg - October 1, 2006
The Wissenschaftskolleg zu Berlin was founded in 1981 at the suggestion of Peter Glotz, who was Berlin's Senator for Science and Research. In the 25 years of its existence, under the three Rectors Peter Wapnewski, Wolf Lepenies, and Dieter Grimm, it has become one of the most renowned Institutes for Advanced Study in the world. More than 1,000 researchers have used the special work opportunities in Berlin - the chance to concentrate on self-chosen research projects in the stimulating company of 40 Fellows from other disciplines and cultures. Numerous initiatives were launched here - for example on the history of science, on theoretical biology, and on knowledge of the Islamic world. After 1989, the Wissenschaftskolleg has contributed to reviving the research landscapes of Eastern and Southeastern Europe by founding the Collegium Budapest and by helping set up institutes in Bucharest, St. Petersburg, and Sofia.
The 25th anniversary was celebrated on October 1, 2006 with a festive event.
