At the Wissenschaftskolleg zu Berlin, internationally recognized researchers, promising younger scientists and scholars, and personalities of intellectual life have the opportunity to concentrate, free of constraints and duties, on work projects of their own choice for one academic year (October - July). The approximately forty Fellows comprise a temporary learning community characterized by diversity of discipline, by internationality, and by interculturality. The institution provides optimal conditions for Fellows to devote themselves completely to their chosen intellectual task while profiting from the potential for stimulation and critique provided by an outstanding community of scholars.
"The times are not such that a learned and creative mind can devote himself in concentration and continuity to his research task at our institutions of higher education. And the times are not such that 'the society' - of whatever country and whatever culture - can afford to do without the harvest of the creative work of the learned mind."
(Peter Wapnewski)
"The Wissenschaftskolleg is an experiment in understanding, a hermeneutic exercitium, that lasts an entire year."
(Wolf Lepenies)
"The Wissenschaftskolleg is one of the - dwindling few - islands of noncommerciality, from whose vantage point the consequences of the prevailing technological/economic rationality can still be independently observed and judged."
(Dieter Grimm)
"Variety does not occur simply of itself: occasionally it must be sought, cultivated and promoted."
(Luca Giuliani)
